Tensley requested a “purple quilt” for her birthday. I decided to add in some darker shades of pink and a few aqua fabrics. Below is a picture of my original fabric pull. I ended up culling the navy blues, yellows, and greens and I added in more dark purples.
My inspiration came from a picture I saw on Instagram. (One of the drawbacks of Instagram is there is no good way to link to pictures you find there, especially if the person you follow has a private account.) You can find a tutorial for the quilt block on Cluck Cluck Sew’s website. I churned out 56 blocks in no time.

(Full disclosure :: I had a clumsy moment one afternoon and
spilled Dr. Pepper on 28 of the blocks!
After a few choice words, and many hours of attempting to remove the
stains using every method & concoction under the sun, I finally gave up on
trying to save those blocks and had to make 28 more! Lesson learned there.)
I found the backing fabric at my LQS. The colors match the fabrics in the quilt top
perfectly, and there was just enough on the bolt. I used Cut to Pieces’ tutorial to make
the quilt back out of regular width (44”) yardage. It is so fast & so easy!
Kim at my LQS did the long-arm quilting. She used a pink-purple variegated thread that was perfect for the quilt.
The quilt measured 84” x 96” before washing. I worried that it wasn’t going to be wide
enough or long enough for her full size bed, but it is actually wider &
longer than it needs to be, even after washing.
I guess if she ever gets a queen size bed, and this quilt is still
around, it will still fit on her bed.
For binding, I used a dark purple fabric with a slightly
lighter purple polka dot. Perfect for
hiding dirt. ;) And polka dots, what’s
not to love?
Quilt Stats:
Fabric:
Quilt top - lots of various purple, pink, and a few aqua fabrics
Backing - purple / pink tile pattern fabric
Binding - dark purple with lighter purple polka dots
Pattern: tutorial from Cluck Cluck Sew
Dimensions: 84" x 96"
Started: January 2015
Finished: March 2015
Quilted by: Kim Barrett @ Quilt-N-Kaboodle

I love it! I love the colors and the block!! Maribeth617@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteYour quilt turned out beautifully ! That's too bad about the spill. I always have a thermos mug of tea on the go in my sewing room and have a spot where I put it that is kinda out of the way. There has been the odd time where I have had a close call but because it has a lid on it I have a split second of grace.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt. My niece loves purple and pink - hope I win. Thanks for the giveaway chance!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your daughter loves her quilt! It is adorable!
ReplyDeleteScraps? I would love some scraps! I am making a scrappy quilt for my daughters teacher and the colors would be perfect!
Really pretty quilt! I could use more pink/purple as I have all boys - so not much pink in my stash! kathyburley@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Love the fussy cutting in the middle. My 3 and a half year old girl would love this - purple is her favourite colour (this week!)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! Lucky little girl. I love purple and my motto is " you can never have too much purple fabric"!
ReplyDeleteI live in Canada so don't enter me in your draw, but I wanted to say that this is a lovely quilt for a little girl who loves purple. Lovely job with the quilting as well.
ReplyDeleteWhen you have a stain that does not want to come out, if you will soak it in a bucket with some Biz it will usually come out. I just throw it in the bucket and leave it for a week or so. You might still be able to try this on your blocks.
ReplyDeleteWhat awesome colors and pattern. I'll have to keep the pattern in mind when I start a quilt for my daughter...sometime in the future :) Thanks for the chance to win the scraps.
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt, great colors, I bet it will be around for amlong, long time, I'd love the scraps. I have a lot of little girls in my life, and have a lot of baby quilts to make this year. Tami (izemmom@gmail.com ) Thanks for the opportunity!

ReplyDeleteFabulous...I really had not considered purple until now.Hope I win.
ReplyDeleteIt's so bright and cheerful! And very purple!
ReplyDeleteI love the periwinkle! I find a good one is hard to track down. Sad you had to remake blocks. I had a mishap with paper and scrapbooking once.
ReplyDeleteVery fun. I have very few purple fabrics so your scraps would be great. Oh, and sorry to hear read the Dr. Pepper spill. Bummer.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt! Of course stars and purples are my absolute favorites. Would love to see how many scraps you generated since you had to make extras. So hard when something like that happens. I always manage to make a hole somewhere after the quilt is done! It will last her for a while. :- ) Thanks for sharing. K- lkw2x6-apq@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteYour daughter is one lucky girl. The quilt is delightful and unique. Your choice of fabrics and the layout make this a work of art!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win as my little gal turns 4 this year! She loves all things quilty & loves to sew with me! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Erica
What a fun quilt. My 17 year old daughter saw this and said, "I'd like a quilt with a unicorn in it mom".
ReplyDeleteI love your purple quilt. Very sweet. What did you end up doing with the Dr. Peppered blocks? I'd be curious to see if they can be transformed to something good...
ReplyDeleteMaybe consider making a pillow case and washing the finished case using a full cycle in the washer. Jump in with the knowledge that you may be wasting your efforts. If it works, though, your daughter will have a matching pillow case. The quilt is darling and I'm sure she is thrilled with it.
ReplyDeleteThe fabric is stunning but please don't consider me for the giveaway as I have enough fabrics already (yes!). I just wanted to tell you how pretty the quilt is and suggest that you try saving the blocks.
I absolutely love the colors including the purples, pinks and greens. I am homeschooled and would like to make another quilt and piano bench cover. Thanks for offering the giveaway!! Kstatepurplecat2@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteYou did a beautiful job on Tensley's quilt! I would love to have your left overs, my girls would love the colors. Heather
